Before you throw it away, have it appraised!

Thursday, October 1st, 2026

Fall is here, and for many people that means cleaning up, getting organized, and finally getting rid of things that have been sitting around the house for years.

Your list may include your garage needing to be cleaned out, organizing basement boxes that haven’t been opened in 10 years, or needing to clear out your shed. Or maybe you’re just getting ready to downsize, clean out a parent’s house, or have finally decided it’s time to get rid of some stuff you don’t use anymore.

No matter what the reason is, they are all valid. But before you throw something away, why not take a second look? You never know, you may have something worth more than you think.

We see this all the time at What’s This Worth?. Someone will come in with a box of items they’ve had sitting around for years and say, “I don’t know if any of this is worth anything, but I figured I’d ask.”

Sure, in many cases it’s true, the value is average, minimal, or not worth much. But sometimes there are a few surprises in that box. This is a part of the job that we live for. Everyone wants the hidden treasure or that diamond in the rough.

We have experienced and trained eyes to see something that you may not even recognize as being valuable. It’s why we always encourage people to ask before they simply throw something away.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is people trying to determine value based solely on what something looks like or how old it is. Just because it looks unusual, unique, or old doesn’t mean that it’s valuable. Another common mistake is searching for an item online and seeing someone asking $500 for the same thing, then assuming that’s what the item is worth. That’s far from how the market works.

There is a big difference between what someone is asking for an item and what similar items are actually selling for. Condition, rarity, authenticity, demand, and a number of other factors can all affect the value. That’s where experience comes in. It’s where knowing someone who is a certified appraiser is useful. Luckily for you at What’s This Worth?, we are exactly that.

We’ve spent decades buying, selling, and appraising a wide variety of items. We have over 60 years of combined experience and are licensed and bonded appraisers as well as certified coin graders. Our job is to take a look at what you have, determine what it’s worth based on the current market, and give you an honest answer.

And if you’re interested in selling, we may be interested in buying it as well. We offer Free, no-obligation appraisals and are always happy to take a look and inform and educate you on what you have. So remember, before you throw it away, do yourself a favor and pick up the phone!
